Robin Williamson, The Celtic Bard

In the 'they don't make them like that anymore' stakes, Robin Williamson has carved a considerable–sized niche all of his own. Founder of Sixties' psych-folk pioneers The Incredible String Band and subsequently the short-lived The Merry Band, Williamson has ploughed a distinctively idiosyncratic path (and, for those with a penchant for it, a curiously attractive one to boot) since releasing his first solo album half a lifetime ago in 1971.

This compilation, on the Swedish Gason label, recycles material from earlier live, studio and compilation albums to offer a distinctive introduction to Williamson's many solo incarnations as a modern-day Celtic bard.

It starts with the nine-minute epic, Love Letter To My Wife Bina, a tale of cider-drinking, the Santa Fe freight train and falling in love, and ends with the Wagnerian expanse of the 15-minute-long Voyage Of Mael Duinn, a reading of heroic derring-do accompanied by an evocative combination of keyboards, jew's harp, sound effects and harp.

The harp is at the genetic core of Williamson's post-Incredible String Band musical identity, and it features here on all but one of the 18 tracks. This gives the proceedings a tonal unity, characterised by a delicate but dancing beauty. That's not to say that everything sounds the same - quite the contrary. The growling, heavy-hanging percussion accompaniment in Lady Macbeth throws the harp into unsettlingly dramatic relief while in the compact but meandering On The Way To The Cathedral, the simple purity of the harp provides a welcome counterpoint to the secret rapture of the lyrics.

It's the miniature pieces that capture the imagination. Where the gnomically titled Leslie's Joog manages to be simultaneously elegant and jaunty, The Lady And The Book offers up a compelling, nightmare-tinged narrative underlined by Williamson's pointed vocal delivery, and sweetly offset by his no less deliberate way with the harp.

For sheer individuality of conception and execution, Williamson's seductive psychedelia-tinged pastoralism has no equals, with one proviso: although it's not comparing like with like, one can't help thinking, and favourably so, of the lyric-centred Clifford T Ward and the lyric-free Andrew Cronshaw throughout this very agreeable album.

Those who know Robin Williamson will already have this album on their radar. For those who don’t, it offers a splendid introduction to a rare talent. Eccentric he may be, but he does so make you wish that there were more people making music as rough-hewn, richly executed and abidingly resonant as that on offer here.

Bizarre but strangely beautiful. File under: unique.

Panic At The Disco, Snoop Dogg launch MTV programme

Panic At The Disco will be joined on stage by Snoop Dogg as the first performers on a new weekly music programme hosted by Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz.

'F'N MTV' premieres tomorrow (June 13) at 8pm PST/EST on MTV, and features a live performance from Panic At The Disco as well as video premieres from Snoop Dogg, The Ting Tings, The Pussycat Dolls and Flo-Rida, who will all be on-hand to introduce their videos.

Viewers can vote on the videos and upload their own re-imagined versions of them to the web.

"Having people interact with anything we're doing makes us feel complete as a band," Ting Tings' Jules De Martino told NME.COM. "It's very much about creating new ways people can get involved."

The Ting Tings' 'Shut Up And Let Me Go' video will premiere tomorrow. "We wanted to make a Kung Fu video because we've been watching a lot of Stephen Chow videos like 'Kung Fu Hustle'," De Martino explained. "We're also into using a lot of layers, shapes and colours."

The programme is scheduled to air on MTV every Friday night throughout the summer. Next week's show will feature Vampire Weekend and Duffy.

"We're bringing music videos back to MTV on a Friday night," Wentz said. "I was raised on music videos, they made me who I am today," he added.

The premiere programme will also feature a spoof segment in which Snoop Dogg gives Wentz and his new bride Ashlee Simpson tips on how to raise their forthcoming child, including putting the baby's crib in the garage so it doesn't wake them and nursing the baby with malt liquor.

Madonna - Madonna Upsets French Fans With Short Performance

Pop superstar MADONNA upset her fans in France on Tuesday night (06May08) after turning up to a concert more than two hours late.

And the Holiday hitmaker further disgruntled her followers by only giving a 40-minute performance in the nation's capital, Paris.

Dressed in a black T-shirt, trousers and big boots, she finally took to the stage on a big chair by sipping champagne directly from the bottle. She got up from the chair and kissed one of her female dancers - like she did with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards - before performing Hard Candy.

One fan, Melanie Monnier, told WENN after the show, "She is great, but the wait and the shortness of the show were a bit disappointed. There was a real lack of emotion."

And fan Guy Juliean even doubted Madonna was performing live. He said, "The show was perfect - too perfect with no room for any emotion. Was she singing live? I'm not sure. It was good to see her but I'm a bit disappointed by her lack of charisma tonight on stage."

The singer announced her love of France and spoke of the honour of performing on the same stage as the iconic French chanteuse Edith Piaf, or fellow legends Juliette Greco and Marlene Dietrich.

She says, "Why do I have this relationship with France? I'm always drawn to working with French people - and frenching French people. Vive la France!"

Lenny Kravitz, John Galliano and Kelly Rowland were among the crowd to see her perform four singles from her new album Hard Candy, as well as Hung up and Music.

Radiohead to Prince: Unblock 'Creep' cover videos

WASHINGTON - After word spread that Prince covered Radiohead’s "Creep" at Coachella, the tens of thousands who couldn’t be there ran to YouTube for a peek. Everyone was quickly denied — even Radiohead.
All videos of Prince’s unique rendition of Radiohead’s early hit were quickly taken down, leaving only a message that his label, NPG Records, had removed the clips, claiming a copyright violation. But the posted videos were shot by fans and, obviously, the song isn’t Prince’s.
In a recent interview, Thom Yorke said he heard about Prince’s performance from a text message and thought it was "hilarious." Yorke laughed when his bandmate, guitarist Ed O’Brien, said the blocking had prevented him from seeing Prince’s version of their song.

"Really? He’s blocked it?" asked Yorke, who figured it was their song to block or not. "Surely we should block it. Hang on a moment."
Yorke added: "Well, tell him to unblock it. It’s our ... song."
YouTube prohibits the posting of copyrighted material. If the site receives a complaint from a copyright owner, it will in most cases remove the video(s). Whether the same could be done for a company not holding a copyright is less clear, but Yorke’s argument would seem to bear some credence according to YouTube’s policies. YouTube, which is owned by Google, declined to comment.
Prince also did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.
The dispute was an interesting twist in debates over digital ownership, held between two major acts with differing views on music and the Internet. Radiohead famously released their most recent album, "In Rainbows," as a digital download with optional pricing. They also have a channel on YouTube.
When Prince performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, Calif., on April 26, he prohibited the standard arrangement of allowing photographers to shoot near the stage during the first three songs of his set. Instead, he had a camera crew filming his performance.
Prince, who founded NPG Records in 1993, has been innovative when it comes to music distribution, too. He released his 1997 album, "Crystal Ball," on the Internet and in 2006 was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the Webbys. In 2007, he gave away copies of his disc "Planet Earth" in a British Sunday newspaper.
But the Purple One has also shut down his official Web site and in September of last year said he would sue YouTube and eBay for not filtering unauthorized content.
Prince fans have organized to urge him to relent in his legal fights to control images and photographs of himself. As of Thursday, the most popular YouTube clip about Prince playing "Creep" is an expletive-laden rant from Sam Conti Jr., who describes himself as a "former Prince fan."

Sarah Jessica Parker Slams Paparazzi

Actress Sarah Jessica Parker has slammed the paparazzi for following her every move, making her life feel like a "spy movie".
The 43-year-old star claims she, husband Matthew Broderick and even their five-year-old son James Wilkie, are constantly chased for photo-opportunities.
Parker says, "Photographers moved into apartments next door to us and we really found ourselves kind of living like a spy movie... I feel like they think they have to be there. Like they punch in or something."

New Oasis album is almost complete

Oasis are reportedly nearing completion of their seventh studio album in Los Angeles.
Noel Gallagher and Co began work on the as-yet-untitled record in London's famous Abbey Road studios in December and have apparently reached the mixing stage of recording.
According to Jersey-based radio station G Rock, the band have now decamped to LA with producer Dave Sardy, who also produced their 2005 album 'Don't Believe The Truth'.
The album, which Noel Gallagher has said is less "songy" and more groove-based, will be released later this year.
